The quickest way to watch IPTV on a computer is VLC: paste your M3U link and press play. If you want a TV guide and a channel list that feels like a TV, use Kodi with its official IPTV add-on. For films and series with posters, choose a dedicated player that supports Xtream Codes.
Which player for which job?
| You want… | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| to check a stream in two minutes | VLC | free, plays almost anything, no real guide |
| a TV-style guide and channel list | Kodi + PVR IPTV Simple Client | free, official add-on, ten minutes to set up |
| films and series with artwork | a dedicated IPTV player (e.g. IPTVnator) | Xtream Codes login, library and guide |
| the picture on your big TV | an HDMI cable from the laptop | or better, a Firestick on the TV |
VLC in two minutes
Windows
- Download VLC from the official site, videolan.org.
- Open Media → Open Network Stream (Ctrl+N).
- Paste your M3U link from the customer area and click Play.
- Press Ctrl+L to open the playlist and switch channels.
Mac
- Install VLC from videolan.org.
- Choose File → Open Network.
- Paste the M3U link and click Open.
VLC shows one long list and no programme guide – fine for a test, less so for daily viewing. What's inside that link is explained in M3U playlists explained.
Kodi with a proper TV guide
Kodi is a free, open-source media centre. Its official PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on turns it into an IPTV player with a guide:
- Install Kodi from kodi.tv.
- Go to Add-ons → My add-ons → PVR clients → PVR IPTV Simple Client and enable it.
- Under General, enter your M3U link.
- Under EPG settings, enter the XMLTV guide link if you have one.
- Restart Kodi. Live TV and the guide appear under TV on the home screen.
Stay with official add-ons. Unofficial Kodi add-ons from third-party sites are often illegal and a security risk.
How the guide is matched to channels: EPG explained.
Dedicated Xtream Codes players
Desktop apps such as the open-source IPTVnator sign in with Xtream Codes and show live TV, films and series separately. Download only from the official project page. More options: IPTV player apps.
Smooth playback on a computer
- Plug in an Ethernet cable, especially on laptops with weak Wi-Fi.
- Keep hardware decoding on (VLC: Tools → Preferences → Input/Codecs).
- Raise the network cache in VLC: Tools → Preferences → Show settings: All → Input/Codecs → Network caching (try 3000 ms).
- Turn off battery saver on laptops if the picture stutters.
