An M3U playlist is a plain text file that lists streams: a name and some details for each channel, followed by the address the player should open. It doesn't contain any video itself. Your player reads the list, shows you the channels and fetches the stream when you press play – which is why one M3U link works in VLC, Kodi, TiviMate and dozens of other apps.
What's inside an M3U playlist
Open an M3U in a text editor and you'll see something like this (shortened, with example addresses):
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="news.example" tvg-logo="https://example.com/logo.png" group-title="News",Example News HD
https://stream.example.com/live/username/password/1001.ts
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="sport1.example" group-title="Sport",Example Sport 1
https://stream.example.com/live/username/password/1002.ts
Line by line:
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
#EXTM3U |
marks the file as an extended M3U playlist – always the first line |
#EXTINF:-1 |
starts a channel entry; -1 means "live, no fixed length" |
tvg-id |
the ID used to match the channel with the TV guide |
tvg-logo |
the channel logo shown in the player |
group-title |
the category the channel is sorted into |
| text after the comma | the channel name you see |
| the next line | the stream address the player opens |
The tvg-id is what links a channel to its programme data – if guide rows stay empty, that's where to look. See IPTV EPG explained.
M3U or M3U8?
Both are the same format. M3U8 simply means the file is saved in UTF-8 encoding, so accented and non-Latin channel names display correctly. Most players accept either. (You'll also see .m3u8 in HLS streaming, where it describes the segments of a single stream – same file type, different job.)
Link or file?
- M3U link (URL): the player downloads the latest list each time it refreshes. Channel changes on the server reach you automatically. This is what you'll normally use.
- M3U file: a snapshot saved on your device. It doesn't update by itself, so it slowly goes out of date.
Your M3U link contains your username and password. Anyone who has it can use your subscription – and if several strangers do, your account may be blocked for sharing. Don't post it in forums, groups or screenshots.
How to open an M3U playlist
- VLC (Windows, Mac): Media → Open Network Stream, paste the link, play. Fast, but no proper guide. Details in IPTV on Windows and Mac.
- Kodi: the official PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on takes the M3U link plus an EPG link.
- TiviMate and other players: choose "M3U playlist" when adding a playlist and paste the link.
- Smart TV apps: some take the link on the TV, others through a website where you enter the TV's MAC address.
Which app to choose is covered in IPTV player apps.
M3U or Xtream Codes?
If your player supports Xtream Codes, use that instead: films and series get their own sections with artwork, and the guide usually loads by itself. M3U is the universal fallback for players that don't support Xtream Codes. Full comparison: Xtream Codes vs M3U.
Making a long playlist manageable
A full IPTV playlist can be long. Instead of editing the file by hand:
- Hide groups you never watch in the player – most apps let you hide whole categories.
- Build a favourites list of the channels you actually use.
- Ask for a filtered link if your service offers playlists limited to certain categories.
Editing a downloaded file is possible with any text editor, but your changes are lost the next time you need a fresh list.
Avoid "free M3U lists"
Lists shared on forums, video sites or Telegram channels are usually unlicensed, die within days and are a common way to spread scams and malware. A trial from a service with a real support team tells you much more – see how to choose an IPTV subscription.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my M3U link load?
The usual reasons are a typo in the link, an expired subscription or a player that expects a different format. Copy the link from your customer area rather than typing it, and check it in VLC – if VLC plays it, the problem is in the other app.
Can I open an M3U playlist on my phone?
Yes. Any IPTV player on Android or iOS that supports M3U will take the same link.
Does KIVARO provide an M3U link?
Yes – your customer area shows both Xtream Codes details and an M3U link. You can try both in the free 24-hour trial.
